Popular Celebrations and Feast-Days

S. Egidio Monte Albino is a little village but a nice stage for Music Festivals and Cultural Events.
We recommend you "Cortili della Storia" and "ViviCultura".
In the neighbourhoods, we have other very interesting events both for anthropological and folkloristic relevance.

I Gigli di Nola
An ancient pagan ritual, now an important Christian event.
Enormous sculptures like high trees (fertility symbols) are transported by the people around the village of Nola in the Summer Solstice day (Saint Pauline's day).

San Giovanni Battista Feast-Day
In Angri in the week around June 24th all the best schools of fireworks art make a tournament. A XV century tradition, like an exorcism against natural disaster. The celebration ends with the fire of the ancient tower. During the week, not to loose the traditional city band's concert.

Madonna delle Galline
During the week after Easter holidays, in Pagani, another worldwide famous spiritual happening take place.
Is a very interesting contamination between the sacre and the profane. An ancient paganism tradition (Lamia Divinty) transformed in a popular cult.
The legend tells that some poultry, eating from the floor in a little row of the village of Pagani, in the same district in which some archaeologist found the Lamia Pagan Divinity ruins, discovered a painting of the Madonna del Carmelo and then the population built a Sanctuary.
Every year, now, the citizens of Pagani offer to the Mother of Carmelo a poultry. The statue of the Madonna with all these birds covering its body, make the tour of the village.
In the evening (and all night long for two days... a real folk rave party!) the pilgrims from all Europe dance the traditional tammurriata and play typical homemade percussion instruments.
ViviCultura
Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino is a small village plunged into countryside (is in the Regional Natural Park of Monti Lattari and an UNESCO world heritage area).
Every year lots of italian intellectuals, writers, poets, musicians and artists go there to have a relaxing holiday in a silent place close to dolce vita summer capitals (Amalfi, Capri, Sorrento).
In Summertime, then, the Major of Sant'Egidio organize some happenings in which all these artists have a public speaking with the tourists, present a book or their recent works.

I Cortili della Storia
The Local Council of Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino, every year organize these history commemoration. Culture, Popular Traditions and folklore are mixed together in these important event for the life and identity of the small village.
During the two days of celebration (usually at the end of September) figurants dressed in a renaissance way, make a parade in village's streets and in XIV century courtyards.
These figurants put on the living theatre stage the ancient arts and drafts, rituals, ceremonies and will invite you to taste some ancient recipes of local tradition.
The visitor will have madrigals and renaissance music as guide and will enjoy a virtual trip in the glorious past of Italian history, in a village that still preserves its XIV century's urban design and artistic heritage.
